In this sci-fi film, the Earth is a post-apocalyptic wasteland after a devastating meteorite impact that unleashed deadly creatures called 'phantoms'. These phantoms are invisible to the naked eye and can drain the life-force of any living being they touch. Aki Ross, a brilliant scientist and survivor of a phantom attack, is on a mission to save the planet from the phantoms. She is aided by her mentor, Dr Sid, who believes that the only way to stop the phantoms is to find and collect eight spirits that represent different aspects of life on Earth. These spirits are hidden in various life forms across the globe; from plants and animals to humans and machines. As the film begins, Aki is searching for the sixth spirit, a plant, in the ruins of New York City. She encounters a group of phantoms and is rescued by a military squad led by Gray Edwards, her former lover and a brave soldier. However, not everyone shares Dr Sid's vision of saving the Earth with the spirits; General Hein, a ruthless and ambitious leader, wants to use a massive orbital weapon called Zeus to obliterate the phantoms once and for all... even if it means destroying the Earth along with them.I have never played any of the Final Fantasy games, so I cannot comment on how well this film captures the essence of the franchise... but as a standalone movie, I thought it was surprisingly good. The CGI animation is stunning and realistic, even after almost two decades since its release. The story is engaging and thrilling, with unexpected twists and turns. The action scenes are spectacular and intense; they remind me of PG-rated 'Starship Troopers' at times... and I mean that as a compliment. The characters are well-designed and expressive; they look like animated versions of real people. They are also voiced by a stellar cast of actors, including Ming-Na Wen, Alec Baldwin, James Woods, Donald Sutherland and more. I liked how the film blended supernatural elements with sci-fi concepts, creating a unique and original world. The only flaw I found was that some of the humour felt out of place and forced; fortunately, there was not much of it. Overall, I would highly recommend this film to fans of sci-fi action.
As Aki and Gray reunite, they discover that they still have feelings for each other, despite their different paths. Aki reveals to Gray that she has been infected by a phantom and that she is using the spirits to keep it at bay. She also tells him that she has been having dreams of a mysterious alien world that seems to be connected to the phantoms. Gray vows to protect her and help her find the remaining spirits. Together, they join forces with Dr Sid and his team of researchers, who are working on a device that can project the spirits and create a barrier against the phantoms.
Meanwhile, General Hein is determined to use Zeus against the phantoms, even though Dr Sid warns him that it will only make them stronger and more aggressive. Hein believes that Dr Sid's theory of the spirits is nonsense and that Aki is a traitor who is working with the phantoms. He also has a personal vendetta against the phantoms, as they killed his family during the meteorite strike. He secretly sabotages Dr Sid's research and tries to convince the council of leaders to authorize the use of Zeus.
Aki and Gray manage to find the seventh spirit, a bird, in an old temple in Africa. However, they are attacked by Hein's soldiers, who capture Aki and take her to a military base. There, Hein interrogates her and tries to prove that she is infected by a phantom. He also plans to fire Zeus at the phantom nest, which is located in the crater of the meteorite impact. Gray and his squad infiltrate the base and rescue Aki, but not before Hein launches Zeus. 061ffe29dd
